Ian MacGillivray

Résumé

Higher Education

2005 - 2009 — Aston University

Qualifications: BSc (Hons) 1st class - Computer Science. Award for exceptional achievement.

A solid grounding in computer science principles and constant opportunity to expand on this as my interest developed.

Work Experience

09/2009 - Present — Thomson Reuters

Constantly adapting to new challenges from a base of technical skill and creativity.

A two-year Technology Graduate scheme, with multiple placements around the business.

05/2009 - 09/2009 — Aston University

Furthering the state of the art in multi-agent systems through probability theory and artificial intelligence.

Postgraduate research in trust & reputation leading to a full paper published and presented at AAMAS 2010 in Toronto. AAMAS is the premier conference and journal for agent-based research.

07/2007 - 07/2008 — Microsoft

The range of experience I was afforded through this role would normally have taken many years to acquire.

Becoming expert in Microsoft bleeding edge and just-released technologies; specialising in LINQ, C# 3.0 and Silverlight. Creating demonstration content, presenting the technologies to a range of audiences (from technical through to board-level) and working with partner companies to implement the technologies in live applications.

02/2005 - 07/2006 — HSBC Bank

Balancing stringent regulations with the need for impeccable and sensitive customer service.

Dealing with customer transactions and enquiries, from the commonplace to the extremely unexpected. People skills, the ability to 'own' a problem through to its resolution and adaptability were all key in this extremely busy city centre branch.

Other roles

The above jobs are chosen as I believe they represent key experiences and places of development in my professional life. In addition to these, I have had a variety of part time jobs writing; (sub) editing; waiting/bartending; in retail; in telesales; and others. Other than the great fun that these have afforded me, I have also had the opportunity to use my innovative nature in a variety of disparate scenarios, and also develop my customer relations and team-working/managing skills.

Publications

A Probabilistic Model for Trust and Reputation, George Vogiatzis, Ian MacGillivray, Maria Chli, Proc. of 9th Int. Conf. on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS 2010), May, 10-14, 2010, Toronto, Canada, pp. 225-232

Various (incl. Technology Tuesdays), Metro, 2006-2008

A number of publications and patent filings are planned for the coming months in Data Mining, related to my current role as a research scientist at Thomson Reuters.

About

I have ideas, and see them through into reality. I set up the Computing Society at my University, now five years old and with triple figure membership. I started a company at age 16 and won national awards for doing so. I want to work with interesting people and do novel work that's truly original, and make a tangible difference at the same time.

I love playing jazz, scuba diving, windsurfing; any adventures I can find. I'm constantly looking for new challenges, places to explore and things to learn.
